How Colway Tyres Are Made
Colway Tyres are extremely environmentally friendly, using old tyres as the base Colway use a sophisticated manufacturing process that retreads the tyres to the same specification as brand new tyres.
- Old used tyres arrive at Colway Tyres.
- Casings are then assessed for suitability. Any tyre that is rejected is sent off to Duralay Ltd. and recycled into carpet underlay.
- Casings that are suitable for retreading are sorted according to size, quality and type, ie. 4x4 tyres, regular car tyres etc.
- Old rubber is removed from the casing treads and sidewalls by a process of buffing.
- 30% of tyres are rejected during the buffing stage and sent off for recycling.
- Next the tyre bead is cleaned using a machine designed specifically for the job.
- Following this, the tyre casings are treated with a specially developed solution to prepare them for the retreading process.
- The tyre is now built by thrusting out rubber into the correct shape and dimension for the tread and sidewall.
- Once the rubber treading and sidewalls have been formed the newly retreaded tyres are balanced.
- The retreaded tyres are then cured under 200 psi and at temperatures up to 150 degrees C for up to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the tyre.
- Any excess rubber is trimmed off to produce a clean retreaded tyre.
- The retreaded tyres are then checked for inflation and visual imperfections with a further 6 % being rejected.
- Only retreaded tyres that pass inspection are permitted to leave the factory.
As you can see the process of manufacturing retreaded tyres is highly involved. This process, honed to perfection by Colway tyres, allows for the manufacture of extremely high quality retreaded tyres and 4x4 tyres that are currently available from Tyre Monkey.
